2022 was a really important year for the Funkwhale project. In addition to all the development work we did, we also overhauled the project's organization to promote a more structured approach to our work.
As we look forward to 2023, we've decided to ramp up our development efforts to ship changes more rapidly and improve our users' experience. This is already made easier by the expansive changes we've made to the codebase, but some of the remaining challenges are less technical and more time-based. The core team that works on Funkwhale is made up of volunteers who give what time we have to the project, but this means that our output isn't consistent or predictable.
Because of this, the steering group has decided we would like to hire a part time member to act as steward for the project as a paid role. We would like to nominate @gcrk for this role, as he has the most extensive knowledge of the project as well as the organizational skills needed to manage all areas of the project.
This role is a formalization of work Georg already undertakes for the project. The basic responsibilities are:
- Merge request/code review delegation
- Communicating monetary decisions with Tech Cultivation
- Overseeing any funded projects
- Undertaking chore development work including: handling dependency updates, small bugfixes, and small refactors
- Handling release planning
This role will be paid from the Funkwhale project's existing budget. Any funds that the employee earns from funded work will be treated separately. The rate will be calculated based on a German student working 15 hours a week.
The financials are currently being discussed with Tech Cultivation and will be reported in our usual budget summaries if the vote is successful.
Please vote Yes if you are in favor of the Funkwhale collective hiring Georg. Please vote No if you are not in favor.
